Entitled “De but en blanc, la saillance du noir,” this thesis on typographic design explores the notion of white space as an intentional tool and a paradoxical entity—both colour and non-colour. I question how the concept of the colour white can serve as a condition for graphic emergence. I also examine the full/empty dialectic it embodies, and explore the effects that consciously drawn white space can produce within the creative process of graphic and typographic design—using this research as a foundation for my MFA project (see previous page).
